Engaging NHS teams in sustainability, and beyond
From pilot to expansion: a simple way to engage busy NHS staff
%20(79).png)
The Situation:
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust wanted a simple, low-effort way to help their staff engage with their Green Plan and thread green actions into their daily work.
The challenge? Reaching extremely busy staff, across multiple sites, in a way that felt relevant and actionable without adding to their workload. They also wanted their own people, from board level, to clinicians, to operational teams, to help tell their own sustainability story.
What they did:
They created a series of short, 1-2 minute “stickers” focused on real projects, progress, and practical actions.
Content was led by their own teams, from strategy leads to managers to frontline staff. Key sustainability topics and messages from existing work and resources were highlighted such as ‘how to get involved’, or even simple green actions around better waste segregation.
Everything was designed to be quick, practical, and easy to dip in and out of in the middle of a busy work day.
What Happened Next :
What started as a sustainability pilot didn’t stay there.
The programme expanded into clinician-first training and has since been recommended to other NHS trusts.
It has also been extended into a longer-term, multi-trust pilot focused on academic and research-led learning. This will assist clinical research experts to share key messages across busy teams.
