Making learning and action a team game
47% of users joined through direct colleague referrals • 100+ organisations engaged • 1,000+ stickers collected monthly
The Situation:
Investors in the Environment (iie) is a leading environmental membership organisation helping businesses improve environmental performance and promote sustainable action.
iie wanted a more engaging way to reach members than traditional long-form training and static learning content. The challenge? Reaching extremely busy staff, across multiple sites, in a way that felt relevant and actionable without adding to their workload. They also wanted their own people, from board level, to clinicians, to operational teams, to help tell their own sustainability story.
The goal was to move beyond learning designed for a small number of sustainability leads — and instead create something simple, social, and engaging that could involve colleagues across entire organisations.
What they did:
iie initially used Stickerbook to engage environmental leads and Green Champions across its membership — providing certified, bite-sized learning journeys in a more accessible and gamified format to help raise awareness and action.
As engagement grew, iie expanded Stickerbook through its open-access model — allowing member organisations to share the platform across teams and colleagues without worrying about licences, seat numbers, or admin barriers.
Teams began creating their own internal competitions, collecting stickers together, and sharing the platform organically with colleagues — turning sustainability learning and action into a genuine team activity.
Different learning journeys were also created for multiple sectors and member types, helping organisations make content more relevant to their teams.
What Happened Next:
Engagement grew quickly once members began using the platform.
The programme expanded into clinician-first training and has since been recommended to other NHS trusts. An initial target of 400 voluntary users was met in just four months — driven largely through colleague recommendations and organic sharing.
Almost half of all users on the platform joined through direct colleague referrals rather than mandatory rollout or central communications — an unusually high referral rate for B2B learning software.
As the community grew, members began using Stickerbook for their own internal campaigns, competitions, and awareness events.
For example, Gateshead College used Stickerbook to run an Earth Day engagement campaign that brought more than 60 colleagues onto the platform in a single day.
The simplicity and open-access nature of the platform has helped iie grow a scalable community of engaged and informed sustainability champions across its membership network.

“Stickerbook has helped us make sustainability learning simple, accessible, and genuinely rewarding for our members. People actually use Stickerbook — refer colleagues and come back to it.
The platform is so quick and easy to use that people don’t just collect stickers themselves — they actively recommend it to colleagues and teams across their organisations.
In fact, almost half of our users joined through direct colleague referrals, which is incredibly unusual for B2B learning software.
It has turned learning and communication into something far more social, engaging, and scalable across our membership community.”
